Falcon webcam

The webcam below gives a live close-up view of the peregrines' nest box and a unique insight into the lives of these amazing birds. Although we obviously can't guarantee their appearance at any given time.

Latest update

The chicks are now very active in the nest and they will soon start moving out of the nest platform and exploring the area immediately around the nest. Their flight feathers and body contour feathers are already poking through the down and over the next week or so most of the downy feathers will give way to regular plumage. As the chicks discover that their wings can trap the air they will engage in short bursts of wing-flapping. Eventually (and sometimes accidentally in high winds) they will realize that they can actually separate themselves from the ground - bringing their first tentative flight ever closer - so keep watching!
Peregrine falcons at NTU

The Newton building at Nottingham Trent University has been the home for the last ten years to a breeding pair of peregrine falcons, who nest on a ledge outside near the top. The nest site has been successfully used to raise twelve chicks over the past four years. Their position, high up above the streets, gives them an excellent view of the city and any potential prey. The birds are protected from human intrusion and cannot be seen from inside the building or disturbed by noise or light.
The breeding cycle

The female normally lays a clutch of three or four eggs in late March or April at two or three day intervals. Both birds share the incubation, which begins with the last or penultimate egg and takes 29 - 32 days per egg.

The chicks hatch over a period of a couple of days and have smaller size differences than chicks of most raptor species. Most of the brooding and feeding of the young is carried out by the female, while the male hunts to supply the food. After the first couple of weeks, the female shares the hunting.

The young fledge at 35 to 42 days, and are independent two or more months later. During this time, the adult peregrines teach the young to hunt and handle prey in flight. Less than a third of peregrines reach breeding age. Those that do can expect to live for five or six years.
