CONSERVATION OF SAKER FALCON (FALCO CHERRUG) IN EUROPE
-
Presenting the Results of the Hungarian-Slovak Saker Conservation LIFE-Nature Programme and Other Saker Conservation Programmes, overview the present conservation status of the species

The Hungarian – Slovak Saker conservation LIFE-Nature project supported by the European Union has started in 2006. Bükk National Park Directorate has been taking the overall management of a team of more than a dozen organisations working on the project, and BirdLife Hungary has been the co-ordinator in chief as for conservation work about the species. The project is coming to an end in September 2010. During these years a vast amount of information have been gathered about the species and an enormous effort have been made in the field and behind desks in order to improve the conservation status of Sakers not only in these two, but also in other countries.

There are results, of course, and those results – we believe – are impressive. As a final major act of the project, we would like to share our findings with every colleagues interested in conservation of Sakers (or raptors general) and related fields of conservation.

In the conference, we plan to cover the following topics:

   Reviewing recent population figures and trends in Europe;
   Reviewing endangering factors
   Thematic presentations on practical conservation activities and experiences related to Saker conservation based on findings of the LIFE project (e.g. habitat analysis to identify key factors for the species; analyses of temporary settlement areas and wintering sites to map mortality factors; conservation of prey species like Suslik; electrocution: surveys, insulation, monitoring; disappearing nesting sites; other human threats: shooting, nest robbing, trapping, poisoning (surveys, egg analysis, etc.);
   Importance and possibilities of communication and PR related to Saker conservation (co-operation with media; farmers; hunters and falconers).

We also plan round tables: on the matter of hybrids (based on the proposal in Saker Action Plan) and a round table will be assigned for drawing conclusion of the project experience, discussion and phrasing proposals for a more efficient work against threats involving various stakeholders.

A field trip to former mountain and recent lowland habitats used by Sakers will be organised in the end of the conference.

The conference is opened for anyone interested. Experts outside of the Hungarian – Slovak LIFE-Nature project are encouraged as well to give presentations or submit posters. However, it must be noted that presentations focused explicitly on Saker Falcon and its conservation will be considered only. (Unfortunately, presentations on other species should be refused.)  

Date and place of the conference is planned as follows:

Venue: Eger (Bükk National Park), Hungary (the exact location in Eger will be specified later)

Date: planned for 15 – 19 September 2010 (the meeting will 2 or 3 days long - subject to presentation’s number and participants’ interests for a one-day excursion)

Details about the programme, accommodation and other practical issues will be prepared by late spring.

16–18 сентября 2010 г. в Венгрии на базе дирекции национального парка «Бьюкк» в г. Эгер состоится конференция «Охрана сокола-балобана (Falco cherrug) в Европе».
На конференции будут представлены финальные результаты Венгерско-Словацкого проекта по охране балобана, финансировавшегося в рамках программы LIFE-Nature, а также ряда других проектов по охране балобана, будет озвучен природоохранный статус вида.
На конференции планируется затронуть следующие проблемы:
- Обзор современных данных и тенденций для популяций балобана в Европе.
- Обзор угрожающих факторов.
- Тематические презентации по различным аспектам практической природоохранной деятельности и опыта, связанного с сохранением балобана, основанные на новых данных, полученных в ходе проекта LIFE; например, такие темы, как анализ местообитаний с целью определения ключевых для вида факторов; анализ мест временного обитания и мест зимовок с целью картографирования факторов смертности; охрана видов, служащих кормовой базой, типа сусликов; гибель птиц от поражения током на ЛЭП: исследования, методы изоляции проводов, мониторинг; исчезновение мест, пригодных для устройства гнёзд; другие антропогенные угрозы: отстрел, разорение гнёзд, отлов птиц, отравление химикатами (исследования, анализ кладок и т.д.).
- Значение и возможности коммуникации и связей с общественностью для сохранения балобана (сотрудничество со СМИ, фермерами, охотниками и сокольниками).
Также планируется проведение двух круглых столов: (1) по поводу гибридов, основанный на предложениях Плана действий по сохранению балобана; (2) для подведения итогов проекта, обсуждения и формулирования предложений, направленных на повышение эффективности работы по противодействию угрозам с привлечением различных заинтересованных сторон.
В завершение конференции будет организована экскурсия в горные местообитания, прежде использовавшиеся балобаном, и в его современные местообитания в низменности.
Конференция открыта для участия всех заинтересованных специалистов. Эксперты, не вовлеченные в Венгерско-Словацкий проект, также приглашаются представить устные доклады (презентации) или стендовые доклады по балобану.
Вступительный взнос конференции – 120 €, который включает материалы конференции и питание в течение конференции. После 1-ого июня вступительный взнос будет 150 €.
